But … it finally fell asleep again. It is still sleeping, but every once in a while it give a cough and out comes a whiff of smoke. So by that you can tell it will wake up again some day, and it will fill the sky with smoke and fire. But don’t you worry about us. We’re safe and sound, and we’re a long way away from the volcano, so we’re in no danger at all.
One day we went to another old volcano, one that is asleep. It is just a small volcano, out in a lake. So we had to ride in some boats to get there. You can see in the picture that where the fire and lava came out is now peaceful and quiet.
This little volcano in the lake is called Taal (ta-All). It’s pretty to see. In November we are going to go there again, but this time we won’t go on the boats over to the volcano. We’ll just stay on the shore of the lake and look at the volcano across the water.
There are a lot of volcanoes in the Philippines, but Mayon and Taal are the volcanoes closest to us. But, really, they are not close at all, in fact, Mayon is on a whole different island from the one we are on, and Taal is fast asleep. Thanks for learning about volcanoes.

This was great! I am glad Alexis is learning about volcanos. We learned a lot by reading this post!
Alexis asked me if I knew the difference between magma and lava and I had to confess that I did not. She then kindly explained that the hot melty rocks are called magma when they are still in the ground but when they explode and drip out of the volcano they are then called lava.
Thought I'd share since I was enlightened!
Anyone else think that Alexis might have gotten a lot of her smarts from Grandpa Owen?
Hey Alexis, thanks for learning about volcanoes and asking Grandpa about them. I've learned a lot just reading this.
Ask Grandpa about some more stuff, so we can learn about other things.
Grandpa Owen - thank you for showing me the valcanoes by your house. I don't have any volcanoes at my house. They are in the Philippines and in Africa.
I really like to see the fire coming out of the top. That's called lava when it comes out. It could burn us so don't touch it with your hands.
I love you guys. I will sing my Horsey, Horsey Song for you (she sings it, while pretening to read it from her empty yellow notebook). Grandpa Owen taught me that song.
I think Grandma Gail is so pretty. And she has pretty hair. I want to give her a big kiss and a big hug when I see her. I will love her forever.
P.S. - Hugs, Kisses, Tickles, and neck grumbles.
My Dad typed this for me.
