The second conference (April 11 and 12) we went to was on an island—Samar in the Eastern Visayas, at Calbayog. Two districts had joined. This was an interesting trip. We caught a plane out of Manila at about 7:00 a.m. (and it was only an hour late). Because there was no morning flight to Calbayog, we went to Catarman on the north side of the island. The district president, President Palmaso, met us there (after waiting for us at the little airport the extra hour) and had a driver shuttle us across the island from Catarman to Calbayog. A long drive in a Ford SUV -- 1980 model. The map looked like it would be just more or less a straight course across the top corner of the island, but it turned out to be a windy, hilly road. We got there about 11:00. We stayed at the “best” hotel in town, I’s Plant (actually a converted ice plant). We thought we were the only guests that day.

This was the view from our hotel window out onto the street. There is always some sort of construction going on, and they only do a small job at a time, just what they can get done that day. Then perhaps they'll be hired back for another day. We walked down this street and went downtown. Sister Roundy wanted to do some shopping and needed to buy some tape to fix up her visual aide for her talk.

We crossed a bridge over a river that flowed into the ocean. There was a lot going on there. The bridge was being fixed (one day at a time). There were a number of ferry boats (as you see here) which people would us to come and go from island to island. It actually was a busy street for being in a "quiet, cozy" town.

These were some fisherman (we thought) on the river on the other side of the bridge.

The hotel we stayed in was a remodeled ice plant. Sister Roundy looked out one of the back doors on the ground floor and this is what she discovered.

We watch these older boys teaching several young guys how to play table tennis. They worked with them for an hour or so, but then when the youngsters left, the big boys really went at it, smacking that little ball back and forth. The guy in black was a pretty fancy player. They played for an hour or so. We sat and watched some of it, and then when we came back down the stairs, they were still at it.
